ABOUT THE FILM

UNTIL THE TRUTH is a searing and inspirational feature documentary project exploring the allegations of sexual, psychological and religious abuse committed by Bill Gothard, one of the most influential leaders in white evangelical Christianity, as well as an intimate, character-focused account of the women who challenged Gothard’s power.

Survivors claim that the abuse took place within an organizational, church and family culture that normalized and perpetuated the trauma for decades. The allegations include grooming, religious and psychological control, harassment, molestation, forced confinement, beatings and rape. Bill Gothard denies all allegations.

Stories of powerful men preying upon women are everywhere, and yet few films have asked the question — what happens after? How does a survivor rebuild a life out of the fog of shame, fear, and betrayal?

Shot over the past four years, this film is more than just an exposé—it is an intimate depiction of the nature and repercussions of grooming and abuse. It delves into the profound impacts on individuals, families, and communities, and ultimately, it focuses on the architecture of recovery, showing that healing is possible.

While these events occurred within conservative evangelical culture, this story also unravels the evolving landscape of faith in America, and unearths profound societal issues—religious dominance, toxic patriarchy, how institutions protect their own power and reputation instead of the most vulnerable, the daunting legal battles survivors endure, and the arduous path of recovery.

We believe that sharing this story will help others caught in abuse, and will create deeper connection, understanding, and empathy around an issue that continues to affect all of American society.

FEATURING:

This film features intimate, character-driven stories from the plaintiffs in the legal case against Gothard and IBLP, accounts from former staff members, courtroom transcripts, archival footage, and pastors and spiritual leaders, as well as subject matter experts including RACHAEL DENHOLLANDER, DR DAN ALLENDER, DR KRISTIN DU MEZ, and BOZ TCHVIDJIAN.
