I am Lenore Boyd, an Australian artist who in 2012 was walking through Mathare ghetto rubbish dumps. There I met youths and children, drinking out of puddles and taking drugs to numb the pain of abandonment persecution, neglect and hunger. They were known in the community as chokora, (Swahili for rubbish.) I started to give art workshops at the local mother Teresa mission. With young motivated Kenyans, we began Alfajiri organization (meaning daybreak in Swahili) Art is therapy. We began to discover talent. Through this we took some of the children to school. We then expanded to dance and music, starting a drop in center that has become a hub of creativity and new life for so many. We need to continue this creativity as advocacy and to lift despairing youth to a better life, a future of hope. We have local and international exhibitions of their work and the world is learning about the incredible gifts of young people that were once known only as "rubbish" We will continue only with your assistance.
