ABOUT A SPLENDID SUN

LOGLINE: While stranded in India, a stressed-out businessman reevaluates his life, connects with his family's culture, and ignites his true artistic passion.

A Splendid Sun is a universal, empowering, and relatable story. Themes include letting go, finding purpose, paying attention, self-expression, and understanding what really matters in life. Travel gives us perspective, it can help us to grow, it can help us discover our true selves. It’s a pause, a reconnection, a reset where we can redefine what success, happiness, or even family means to us. This is a film that will inspire and uplift audiences, and maybe even set them on their own journey of self-discovery. The characters of both AJ and his sister Veda are at a junction in their journeys. While AJ spends time with his cousin Krishna in India, he rediscovers his creativity, which he had set aside for family obligations. And back in Los Angeles, Veda works towards her goal of becoming the first female CEO of a construction company.

A Splendid Sun is all about letting go of what you thought you should do, and discovering who you are meant to be.

NOTE FROM LISSA COFFEY:

For me, life changed dramatically on my first trip to India. Although I have no ancestral ties to India, it somehow felt like home from the very beginning. The country is vibrant – the colors, the music, the food, the stories… all the senses are engaged. It can be overwhelming at times, but there is no denying the deep, rich history of this ancient and beautiful place. More than anything, it’s the feeling of India I bring home with me on every trip, and that stays with me always. It’s that feeling of bliss and healing and wisdom that resonates with visitors, and keeps them coming back. This story is personal for me, and I wrote it including many of my own experiences getting to know India, as AJ does.

Rates of depression and anxiety have been rising among young people for decades. Life is complicated, especially when you’re learning all about it as you’re going through it. It’s easy to get caught up in the things that keep us busy, the things that call for our attention. We’re running in a lot of different directions trying to keep up. But at a certain point, after we finish school, or after we’ve met the expectations that family or society has imposed on us, or maybe after some heartache, we finally have a chance to take a look at where we are. Who am I? What do I want? What is my purpose? These are the big questions that we all end up asking ourselves, no matter where we live or what part of the world we come from.

Film has a unique way of reaching people. It is an art that shows us a different way of seeing life, that takes us to worlds we could only imagine. A Splendid Sun brings the centuries old conversation between Arjuna and Krishna into modern day, and encourages us to explore these questions on our journey, and to enjoy the journey itself. That’s why we are making this film. A Splendid Sun will help all of us, no matter our age or our address, to feel inspired, uplifted, and empowered to meet any challenges that inevitably come our way. When we heed the hints of the heart that follow, we find the path that leads us to our own true nature.
