UNESCO-Honored Literary Epic Makes Its U.S. Debut.

Bestselling novels on Native American resistance as a cross-platform series for comics, television and film.

Reimagining under Native guidance Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich’s epic series of Native American resistance for today’s global audiences: HARKA is a six-novel literary saga set in the 1870s on Native homelands now known as South Dakota and Wyoming. It follows a young Lakota warrior as he rises to lead his people's resistance against the onslaught of U.S. colonization.

Never before released in the United States and first published in 1951 as Sons of the Great Bear, the saga went on to reach over 12 million readers worldwide and was recognized in 1963 by UNESCO as one of the world’s greatest YA novels of all time. Its author, German historian Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich, was a trusted ally of the Lakota and of the American Indian Movement. Now, for the first time in English and in collaboration with Native advisors and artists HARKA is being brought to life through books, film, and television.

Donations support the Native Advisory Board, translation of the first novel, creation of a graphic novel and a TV pilot script, digitization of the author’s archives, and global audience engagement and outreach.

Join us in reviving a powerful saga of Native American strength, survival, and pride through storytelling that inspires millions and lasts for generations.
