Resilient is more than a movie. It is the story of my life—growing up homeless and advocating for policies that increase access to higher education and training for students experiencing homelessness.

As a child and teenager, I faced years of homelessness due to my parents' struggles with addiction and their repeated arrests—121 times by the time I finished high school. Despite these daunting odds, I remained determined. I was fortunate to excel as an All-American football player, which opened pathways to playing Big Ten football, earning four college degrees, including my doctorate, and eventually becoming a school principal.

My journey is a testament to what students experiencing homelessness can achieve when given the opportunity. It’s a story of resilience—and a reminder that access to higher education can transform lives. As one of my favorite teachers used to say, "Education is the one thing that no one can take from you."
