The Untold Story of Women Who Changed the Digital World
DOLS (Dirty Old Ladies of Software) is a feature documentary that uncovers the "Hidden Figures" of Silicon Valley—nine trailblazing women who revolutionized American classrooms from within tech giants like Apple, IBM, and Microsoft.
While the tech industry initially dismissed education as "women’s work," these former teachers became the essential bridge between emerging code and classroom pedagogy. Their influence reached from the halls of Washington D.C. to the living rooms of millions, as they helped design Sesame Street and launched iconic computer games like Oregon Trail, Reader Rabbit and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego.
Beyond laying the foundation for a $213 billion global gaming industry, the film celebrates a forty-year "sisterhood" of women who continue to challenge ageism with wit and camaraderie, proving that the innovators who shaped the digital past still have much to say about the Ai future.
Reclaiming History in the Age of AI
The importance of DOLS lies in its ability to reclaim a pivotal, yet overlooked, chapter of history where technology was harnessed as a tool for public good rather than mere "capital greed." The Department of Education is being dismantled, putting public education—and the values it was built on—under direct threat. At the same time, Ai is reshaping the classroom at an unprecedented pace, with women once again underrepresented in the conversation.
The DOLS is a historical roadmap that can help us navigate the latest technology sea change. This sisterhood’s story serves as a reminder of what’s possible when women build the future of learning—not just code or curriculum, but community.
Their story challenges the myths that women don’t support each other professionally and that innovation only happens in Silicon Valley garages, because it did happen, at: school district meetings, tech conference happy hours, spa weekends and on late-night phone trees—by women taking risks together, against the odds.
As we navigate a murky future for education, DOLS offer a joyful and timely reflection on how far we’ve come, and insight into the work that still lies ahead, but ultimately they posit a critical question about our digital future: How are we gonna use the lessons we’ve learned to ensure the next generation of tech serves to empower, rather than diminish the human experience.
