Let's Bring ECHO Immersion to Life Together

As a dancer, choreographer, and trans-disciplinary artist, my body is a conduit, a way of listening to the vibrations of the past, present, and future. For more than 35 years, dance has been my method for perceiving the world and processing the stories our bodies carry when words are not enough. Working at the intersection of movement, immersive media, and social justice, I know deep knowledge must be felt. While traditional archives preserve facts and dates, they cannot fully hold the grief, resilience, joy, and ancestral wisdom carried across generations.

ECHO Immersion is my act of world-building: an ancestral archive that audiences enter not merely with their minds, but with their whole bodies and sensorial awareness.

The project is rooted in the history of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the largest forced migration in human history, and one of its deepest moral ruptures. ECHO Immersion explores the enduring reverberations of the Middle Passage: the ways it continues to shape our institutions, our communities, our relationships, and our understanding of what it means to be human. This history lives and resonates in the present, demanding that we imagine a more just future.

On March 25, 2026, the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/80/L.48, declaring the trafficking and enslavement of Africans the gravest crime against humanity. ECHO Immersion answers this historic global reckoning, creating an embodied space where remembrance becomes an active encounter, dialogue, and possibility.

Through presence, vibration, breath, rhythm, and feeling, the body remembers what language cannot express. This truth shapes every aspect of the project. By blending movement, spatial sound, water, light, artificial intelligence, and immersive technologies, ECHO Immersion creates the conditions for deep human resonance, inviting audiences to move beyond passive witnessing toward feeling the humanity of those who came before us, and of one another, across time, geography, and vibration.

Today, ECHO Immersion is entering an exciting new chapter with a residency at Image Cauldron by WET. This is the next step in a long-term artistic vision that brings together dancers, musicians, designers, technologists, educators, and community partners to explore how embodied knowledge and emerging technologies can deepen our capacity for liberation, remembrance, and collective imagination.

ECHO Immersion is not an exercise in passive reflection; it is a live catalyst for systemic reckoning and reparative justice. To confront a crime against humanity requires more than remembering history, it demands active structural repair.

• Economic Equity for Black Led projects: Providing equitable wages and multi-year research and development stipends directly to Black, brown, and historically marginalized artists, dancers, and technologists.
• Preserving Living Archives: Funding the ongoing documentation of oral histories, movement practices, and ancestral memory, ensuring that narratives too often erased by colonial structures are permanently protected and elevated.

“You come from those who survived the Middle Passage.”

My mother said this to me again and again as a child. I have carried her words ever since, and that understanding became the catalyst for ECHO Immersion.

I grew up in a lineage of witnesses. My grandfather documented everyday Black life through photography, preserving moments the world chose to overlook. My mother, the artist Sharon Haggins Dunn, used public art to celebrate Black history and honor her community. From them and others, I learned that art is never just personal expression, it is a responsibility. It is a way of saying: We are here. We survived. We continue.
